Online cab hailing company Uber has today officially launched UberAUTO, its app-based Auto booking service in Bhubaneswar, capital city of the state of Odisha.

The launch was supported by the Government officials as the city Mayor, local MLA and the city Police Commissioner were present in the launch event.

UberAuto was first launched as an experiment in Delhi last year is a new category for hailing auto rickshaws and was one of the first India-specific solutions by the Silicon Valley Company. This was also the first time Uber rolled out cash payments for its riders, a feature which was later extended to taxis across the country.

Uber currently has UberX and the cheapest UberGO cab services in Bhubaneswar.

UberAuto works just like hailing any other kind of Uber vehicle. Users open the app, select UberAuto from the options, and wait for a driver to confirm. Customers can pay for the ride through online payments like Credit Cards, Debit Cards, PayTM, Airtel Money as well as cash.

Uber has launched the service on April 1st for a couple of reasons:

  • April 1st is celebrated as Utkal Divas in the memory of the formation of the state as a separate province on 1 April 1936.
  • Bhubaneswar was declared as the #1 smart city in ‘Smart City initiative’ which was initiated by the Govt. of India on April 1st previously.

“Auto rickshaws are one of the important layers of daily commute ecosystem in India cities. Being the cheapest and most ubiquitous way to get from point A to B Auto Rickshaws are is still a convenient and widely available mode of city transport,” said an Uber spokesperson to TSJ.

“In past 7 months of operations we have seen tremendous growth in Bhubaneswar. Launch of UberAuto will add more convenient and affordable ways to the city’s day to day commute system along with our other low cost services,” she adds.

As the city emerges one of the top destinations for startups & businesses, companies like Uber, OLA and Jugnoo have started their operations in Bhubaneswar within the last one year.

Uber serves 27 cities in India, which makes the country its second largest behind the U.S. Tapping into Auto Rickshaw sector would help the cab aggregators considerably widen their user base.

In Bhubaneswar UberAuto has to compete with the country’s biggest Auto aggregator Jugnoo which is now present over 29 cities in India.

uberAUTO will only be available in Bhubaneswar for now and be priced as per the below chart
