Food delivery startup Swiggy and Zomato have started home delivering of alcohol in Jharkhand, starting from Ranchi. Alcohol delivery went live in both these apps today after obtaining necessary approvals from the state government. Both companies eye to expand the service to other states in coming days.

On Swiggy app, one can order by going to to the ‘Wine Shops’ category. Users have to update their app to see the new category.

Customers will have to submit a government-approved proof of age to be able to place an order for liquor.

Speaking about the new category, Anuj Rathi, VP – Products, Swiggy, said, “Since the beginning of the pandemic, Swiggy has relentlessly worked to solve customer pain points and support local governments in every way possible. By enabling home delivery of alcohol in a safe and responsible manner, we can generate additional business for retail outlets while solving the problem of overcrowding, thereby promoting social distancing.”

With their core food delivery business hit badly during the coronavirus lockdown, the two companies have already started grocery delivery weeks back.
