Zomato, today has officially announced that it’s shutting down the UrbanSpoon website for the users. The leading Indian restaurant discovery platform acquired food listing website UrbanSpoon for $60 million earlier this year.
Any attempt to access UrbanSpoon is now redirected automatically to Zomato website. The UrbanSpoon app still functioning as it was with a warning that the contents and user details have been migrated to Zomato.
Urbanspoon was the second largest player in the restaurant listing business in the US, followed by Yelp on the first place. UrbanSpoon app had over 31 million installs at the time of acquisition in this January. The inventory contains a directory of 1 million restaurants from 500 cities in the US.
Zomato changed its logo after the acquisition to retain the existing UnrabSpoon users who might uninstall the app with a sudden change in name and look.
Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato on this regard wrote,
“It’s important to us that we don’t lose a lot of UrbanSpoon users by giving them a new name, a new logo and a new product”.
“This is a simple case of making sure that the transition (of merging Urbanspoon to Zomato) is the least painful for the most number of our users,” he added.
